The 13th art experience from the art laboratory, HOME juxtaposes works from the Dutch Golden Age to present day to spark contemplation of the way we perceive comfort within four walls.
At a time when celebrity decorators draw eyes across the Internet and cable TV, HOME is where the art is. Though choosing works to match the color of your sofa is generally frowned upon, when you get right down to it, most every art collection has been started in this way. (Though no one ever seems to admit it…)
Does the thought of old masterpieces glaring down from the wall bore you? Does contemporary art, by its very nature, brighten the space you call “home”? Is that high-design appliance in your kitchen worthy of an art museum? Are modern installations, by their very nature, just “junk” with nameplates? What of the works that your children scribbled in art class? Or the items you inherited from your grandparents? Should you string velvet ropes around your living room? Or in your towel-strewn bathroom?
With works arrayed as if in a cozy apartment throughout ESMoA’s slender space, HOME creates a dialog between select works to detach viewers from time and provide answers – or at least possibilities – to all of the above. The experience starts with a bang in the entrance hall, where an American photorealistic still life faces contemporary shooting range targets. Artists include Golden Age Dutch painter Jan van Goyen, contemporary conceptualists Bernd and Hilla Becher, American patron of surrealism Joseph Cornell, German impressionists Max Slevogt and Max Liebermann, Nabi founder Eduard Vuillard, American photorealists Richard Estes and Ralph Going, Swiss symbolistic painter Arnold Böcklin, and young “contemporaries” Robert Seidel, Flora Kao and Cole Sternberg. The apartment like setting, which may provoke viewers to reconsider the art in their own homes, is courtesy of ESMoA.
People today tend to synchronize their tastes with sleek and neutral arrangements or get totally lost in the constant wave of things. If chaos is the nutrient solution for development, the paradox could easily work as its trigger for creative thinking. HOME invites visitors to experience the firework of extraordinary artwork by feeling its inspiring spark. Cool and sweet may be opponents, but the art experience shows there can be a friendly encounter – especially at home.
HOME opens at ESMoA at 10:00 a.m. on October 12, 2014 with an introduction at 2:00 p.m. and activities for the whole family are offered throughout the day. The art experience will run through Sunday, February 1, 2015
